UNITED NATIONS PARTICIPATION IN THE WAR

Of the fifty-three nations that that endorsed the United Nations decision to take action in Korea against the Communist aggressors, only sixteen provided combat elements. Another five provided medical units in support of the United Nations forces. The Republic of Korea was not a member of the United Nations but has been included to complete the Allied force.  Additionally, offers of military and other assistance are included in this page.

United Nations countries initially contributed the following armed forces as indicated below :-

AUSTRALIA

One infantry battalion (960). Three destroyers, one aircraft carrier, one frigate. One RAAF fighter squadron, one air communications unit with base and maintenance personnel.

BELGIUM

One infantry battalion. Air transport.

CANADA

One reinforced infantry brigade, one artillery group, one armoured battalion (7,065), three destroyers and one RCAF air transport squadron.

COLOMBIA

One infantry battalion (1,060) and one frigate.

ETHIOPIA

One infantry battalion (1,069).

FRANCE

One reinforced infantry battalion and one patrol gunboat.

GREECE

One infantry battalion (849) and one air transport squadron.

LUXEMBOURG

One infantry company (48).

NETHERLANDS

One infantry battalion (636) and one destroyer.

NEW ZEALAND

One artillery regiment and two frigates.

PHILIPPINES

One infantry battalion (5,000) and an armoured company (1,367).

REPUBLIC OF KOREA

Seven infantry divisions (98,000), Capital security command, Marine corps, National police internal security battalions and a small amount of Coast guard and Air Force units.

THAILAND

One infantry battalion (4,000), two corvettes, air and naval transport.

TURKEY

One infantry brigade (6,086).

UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA

One SAAF fighter squadron and staff officers.

UNITED KINGDOM

Two infantry brigades, one armoured regiment, one and a half artillery regiments, one and a half combat engineer regiments, and supporting ground forces, one aircraft carrier, two cruisers and eight destroyers, one survey ship with Marine and supporting units, two Sunderland squadrons of the RAF.

UNITED STATES

OF AMERICA

Seven divisions (infantry, cavalry and Marine corps), one artillery regiment, one combat engineer battalion. A fast carrier task group with a blockade and escort force, an amphibious force, reconnaissance and anti submarine warfare units. One Tactical Air Force, one Bombardment Command and one Combat Cargo Command, all with supporting elements.
