Obverse A representation of the New Zealand Coat of Arms
Reverse A Kiwi facing to the right standing on six lines, and below it the inscription in 2.5mm high letters “NEW ZEALAND” between two heraldic stars (mullets), and underneath the whole of which are three wavy lines and the inscription “FOR OPERATIONAL / SERVICE” on two lines in 2mm high letters.
Size 37mm wide.
Suspension A straight non-swivelling suspender connected to the top of the medal by a two legged claw.
Composition Silver plated base-metal.

Ribbon 32mm wide, with a central black stripe of 2mm, flanked by white 2mm, black 7mm, white 2mm, black 2mm and white 2mm.

Instituted By Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Saint James’s Court on 23rd July 2002, to recognise New Zealand military personnel who served in all operations since the end of the Second World War in September 1945.
Qualification A person qualifies for the award of the medal if he or she was a member of the New Zealand Naval Forces, Army, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, the Defence Forces or the New Zealand Police Force and has been awarded a New Zealand or a Commonwealth, British, or other non-New Zealand medal for service in a war, or a warlike or non-warlike (including peacekeeping & the Rhodesia Medal) operation since the end of the Second World War in September 1945, and that the medal has been approved for wearing as a war or campaign medal in the official list in which orders, decorations, and medals must be worn in New Zealand. He or she must have served 7 days or more, continuous or aggregated, on the posted strength of a unit or formation on land, or in a ship or craft, or completed 7 sorties or more as aircrew or supernumerary crew, or served 30 days for official service visits, inspections, or other occurrences of a temporary nature of duty and that the service was a qualifying service towards one or more medals listed above.
