Obverse Plain except for a representation of Bhavani (Divine Sword) surrounded by the suns rays, symbolising justice and discrimination.
Reverse An embossed lotus flower with buds and leaves surrounded with the legend " GENERAL SERVICE * INDIA * ".
Size Not known.
Suspension By a straight non-swivel suspender, attached to the medal by a claw mounting.
Composition Cupro-nickel.
Designers Not known.
Naming  
Ribbon Red, with five equally spaced thin green stripes. The red symbolising valour and passion and the green auspiciousness.
No. of clasps 7 - Cupro-nickel, attached to the suspender with a pin and to other clasps with two rivets. Only one clasp issued for the Korean war: -
"OVERSEAS, KOREA 1950-53" - Issued for service with the 60th (Parachute) Indian Field Ambulance in Korea between 22 November 1950 and 8 July 1953.
Other emblems Lotus leaf - A single miniature lotus leaf emblem is worn on the ribbon by those Mentioned in Despatches.

Instituted By the President of India on 26 January 1950, to be awarded with a clasp or bar indicating the operation.
