COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL, UNITED NATIONS OPERATIONS IN KOREA, 1st issue (Medaille Commemorative des Operations de l'Organisation des Nations Unies en Coree)

Obverse In the centre are the arms of Korea surrounded by a geometric circle with eight lobes, symbolising liberty and in memory of the dead. This is surmounted on a flaming torch, the flame of which protrudes above the medal, and is surrounded by two branches of olive. The whole is surmounted on rays materialising from the centre of the medal symbolising 'The land of the morning calm.'
Reverse Plain except for the inscription " MEDAILLE / COMMEMORATIVE / FRANCAISE / DES OPERATIONS / DE L'ORGANISATION / DES NATIONS UNIES / EN COREE " in 1mm high letters on seven lines and surrounded by " REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE " in 2mm high letters.
Size 36mm in diameter, 3mm thick.
Suspension By an architecture of a pagoda's roof, attached to the top of the torches flame by a small hook and ring. A ring is attached to this bar through which the ribbon passes in the American style
Composition Bronze

Naming Issued un-named.
Ribbon 36mm wide, composed of the colours associated with the United Nations flanked on both sides by the national colours of France. 8mm France - one third ultramarine, one third white and one third scarlet. 20mm U.N. - one third light blue, one third white and one third light blue. 8mm France - one third scarlet, one third white and one third ultramarine.

Instituted Propositioned by M. Rotinat, president of the Commission of National Defence of the Council of the republic, on 23rd August 1951. Instituted by Decret Number 5234 of 8th January 1952 from the French Ministry of National Defence and is to be worn immediately after the 'Medaille des Services Volontaires dans la France libre.' Details of the ribbon are contained in the Journal Officiel de la Republic Francaise, instruction of 12th February 1952.
Qualification Awarded to all French military forces in Korea and to naval personnel who served for a minimum period of two months in the waters adjacent to Korea. It can also be awarded to foreigners serving in French units with agreement of their respective governments. Service terminated by injury and those decorated with the Croix de Guerre or higher award but who failed to complete the required length of service were also entitled to the medal.
