CANADIAN PEACEKEEPING SERVICE MEDAL

Obverse A depiction of three Canadian peacekeepers taken from the National Peacekeeping Monument in Ottawa. One figure is an unarmed UN military observer holding a pair of binoculars, another a kneeling female figure shouldering a radio, with a dove clutching an olive branch flying over and the third a guard with a rifle. The words ‘PEACEKEEPING’ (upper) and ‘SERVICE DE LA PAIX’ (lower) are separated by a maple leaf on both sides lie at the circumference.
Reverse A maple leaf with the royal cipher (EIIR) topped by a crown in the centre with a branch of laurel on either side and the word ‘CANADA’ below.
Size 36mm diameter and mm thick.
Suspension A single-toe claw attaches to the top of the medal and to the centre of a plain straight non-swivelling suspender. There is a maple leaf centred on straight suspender.
Composition Antique Silvered Copper.

Naming Issued unnamed.
Ribbon 32mm wide, having a central stripe of United Nations blue of 8mm flanked by stripes of white 4mm, red 4mm and green 4mm. The blue is the official colour of the United Nations, organisation under which authority most of the peacekeeping missions are conducted, the green represents service, the white is the colour of peace and the red represents the blood shed in the service of peace. Red and white are also the official colours of Canada as appointed by King George V in 1921.

No. issued By September 2003, 68,000 had been issued. At this time almost 125,000 Canadian personnel have served in peacekeeping missions the past 53 years. This record is unsurpassed by any nation.
Instituted Inspired by the award in 1988 of the Nobel Peace Prize to all UN peacekeepers. The award was approved by Queen Elizabeth II on 25th April 1997.
Qualification Awarded to Canadian citizens for a minimum of thirty days service on a peace- keeping or observing mission since 14th November 1947. Military personnel, police officers and civilians are eligible. Recipients are also entitled to wear any UN, NATO or other international medal issued. Eligible Missions and Operations related to the Korean War are: -

UNTCOK – (UN Temporary Commission on Korea) 14.11.47 to 2. 6.50 UNCMAC - (UN Command Military Armistice Commission) 27. 7.53 to present day, including post-conflict service with HMCS Sioux as well as deployed Canadian army and air force units in Korea and Korean Waters.
