THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICE MEDAL 1945-1975

 

Obverse The arms of the Commonwealth of Australia surrounded by the legend ‘THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICE MEDAL 1945-1975’ ensigned with the Crown of  Saint Edward.
Reverse The seven pointed Federation Star surrounded by sprays of wattle leaves and blossoms between the points of the Star. A plain horizontal panel 25mm across and 8mm deep occupies the centre of the Star.
Size 38mm diameter and 3mm thick.
Suspension A straight non-swivelling suspender connected to the top of the medal by the Crown of Saint Edward.
Composition Silver-nickel.
Designers Not known.
Naming ‘41642 / T.M. FORRESTER’ on two lines in 2mm high capital letters on the reverse of the medal in the plain horizontal panel.
Ribbon 32mm wide, having a central yellow stripe of 2mm, flanked by two green stripes of 2.5mm, in turn flanked by two 4.5mm stripes of khaki, with a wide 8mm stripe of navy blue on the left and a 8mm wide stripe of pale blue at the right.
No. of clasps 14 in total to date, 37mm wide and 6mm high bearing the name of the theatre there the recipient served, but only two for the Korean War area of operations.

‘JAPAN’- 3rd September 1945 to 28th April 1952; thirty days service with the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan

‘KOREA’– 9th to 23rd June 1950; for participation in UN Commission activities in Korea.

28th July 1953 to 26th August 1957;  thirty days service with British Commonwealth Forces Korea, in Korea or Japan.
27th August 1957 to 13th February 1975; thirty days service with UN Command (MAC) in the DMZ of Korea.

No. issued  In total, it is estimated that about 65,000 people are eligible for this medal.
Instituted  By the Australian Government to fill the gap between the Australian Service Medal of World War Two and the current Australia Service Medal, which was instituted in 1991.  The award was approved by Queen Elizabeth II on 13th September 1988.
Qualification  It is awarded to all ranks of the Australian Defence Forces for service in peacekeeping but non-warlike service in theatres of operation between the end of  the Second World War and 13th February 1975 for which no other Australian medal has been awarded.
